Bangkok is a city of contrasts - Buddhist temples, golden-topped palaces, trendy sky bars, and traditional Thai living along the waterways - called khlongs - offering marvelous photo opportunities. This morning, head with your private guide to the historic center of Bangkok and start your day at Wat Suthat. Few visitors come to this temple early, so much the better to enjoy the monks melodic chanting ritual. It’s an incredible sensory experience. From here, a walk to Wat Pho (famous for its 141-foot-long reclining Buddha) allows you a glimpse into small alleys with wooden houses, guardian spirit signs and lively fruit and flower markets. Your next stop takes you to the most revered shrine in the Kingdom, Wat Phra Kaew, the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, as well as the splendor of the adjacent Grand Palace. For your last stop, we cross the Chao Phraya River by water-taxi to visit Wat Arun, the Temple of Dawn. Unique from the rest of Bangkok’s temples, Wat Arun’s iconic stunning design is made up of colorfully decorated spires that look as if to stand guard over the river. Enjoy a leisurely lunch with scenic views at the riverside Sala Rattanakosin restaurant to conclude your morning, and experience the mid-day bustling atmosphere of the lively Chao River. After lunch your guide will accompany you back to your hotel.

This afternoon, enjoy some time on your own to relax.

Bangkok’s maze of khlongs are a hub of traditional waterfront living that give the city its reputation as the “Venice of the East”. This afternoon, board a long-tail boat with your private guide to explore the khlongs, a fantastic way to watch the daily local life unfold along the canals. Visit the local artists’ community of Khlong Bang Luang, known for its unique century-old wooden homes, smaller art studios, vintage antique galleries, and historic temples that are seldom visited by tourists. The centerpiece of the Klong Bang Luang community is Baan Silapin, also known as the Artist’s House. The 200-year-old well-preserved family dwelling occupies a two-story wooden building hovering over one of the main khlongs, and is centered on a 300-plus-year-old chedi. Don’t miss the traditional half hour Thai shadow puppet performance, which is typically performed daily at 2 p.m. except on Wednesday. After the puppet show, head back to Ta Chang Pier for a transfer back to your hotel.

This evening your guide will take you to witness one of Thailand's most popular and exciting sporting events: Thai kick boxing at Rachadamnoen or Lumpini Stadium (ringside seats included). The fighting is interesting, but you'll especially enjoy the gambling pandemonium that goes along with it. Stay for an hour or two before returning to the hotel.

The countryside surrounding Bangkok is dotted with lively traditional floating markets where colorful vendors paddle along in their canoes brimming with fresh fruit, vegetables and souvenirs, hawking their wares to shoppers on the banks. Have your camera ready for the first stop of the day at the truly unique Maeklong Railway Market, where a train runs through the center of the market several times a day. Merchants spring to action as the warning bell alerts them to the train’s approach, snapping protective awnings in place with moments to spare. After the train has passed, continue the drive with your private guide to the Amphawa floating market, a popular choice with locals over other floating markets in the region and a great stop for lunch. Afterwards, board a long-tail boat for a journey up the Mae Kong River, stopping at Wat Bang Kung to explore a small shrine to Buddha completely enclosed within the roots of a Banyan Tree. Back at the market, Thais congregate to purchase day-to-day goods, fruits, vegetables, clothing and even toys from the long-tailed boats. The area around the market is equally vibrant, featuring open-air restaurants specializing in seafood and Thai desserts and is a great vantage point of the canals filled with colorful boats.

Traveling with kids means fighting a near-constant battle to keep them engaged; the museums and cafés that lure the adults are rarely enough to stimulate younger minds. Whole towns that float! And that’s just for starters. There’s something new to discover in the Land of Smiles wherever you look. (Just don’t tell the kids that it’s educational.)

Later, navigate a maze of khlongs (canals) en route to the artists enclave of Klong Bang Luang for a traditional Thai puppet show, take in the sights and sounds of a Muay Thai kickboxing match (from ringside, no less) at night, and head into the countryside to visit some unusual markets, including one that floats on the river and one built in the middle of a railway line. Up in the peaceful northern capital of Chiang Mai, you’ll have the chance to ascend to Doi Suthep for an unbelievable view of this idyllic city’s temple-dotted skyline, go zip-lining above the canopy of a 1,500-year-old rainforest, and meet baby elephants at a rescue center. Last stop: Phuket, home to some of Thailand’s best beaches. Here, you’ll get an insider’s glimpse into life on the Andaman Sea via visits to a Muslim fishing village, discover Thai cooking in a local expert’s home, and learn about the island’s diverse heritage directly from the people who live there.
